Blog #4 "On Becoming" Nelly Rosario/"Blogueras: Latina Body Image" Latino USA

Rosario's personal essay talks about how to identify oneself, in this case how she identifies with herself while discussing the many different ways which she can identify as. She gives her readers this idea of not being associated as "American" because the term American, according to her is slippery, transitory, and no geology, anthropology. She cannot seem to figure her identity out because she sees both African and Dominican inside of her. She gets called African American, Latina, Dominican and she does not understand why the different labels or a list as she says.

The United States and pretty much everywhere else have created these ideas of Assimilation and "the way things are supposed to be". In traditional Latino/a culture, (sometimes) it is rude for the women to speak about anything considered "manly" like working or politics. Women are supposed to cook clean, do their work and the extended always asks about new boyfriends or if they are married and have children. Never do they ask about college. Many cultures are like this today and it is unfair to all women and men to have to be put into a standard that shouldn't define who they are. same goes for assimilation, people do not always have to assimilate to ideas and beliefs if they do not wish to.

The podcast "Blogueras: Latina Body Image" discusses an ongoing issue not only for women but for teenage girls who are Latina. It is upsetting that young girls already experience such hate for their body or see themselves as overweight or 'do not have a thigh gap' as mentioned in the Podcast by Kassandra Peña. She argues that older women must be role models for the young girls who feel a certain way about their body image and to act in selfless ways and appreciate yourself so that they see that and react the same way.
